Reading Olympics
Reading Olympics 2015-2016
This year, your child will be participating in Mrs. Lane's Reading Olympics. This is a program I borrowed from another gifted teacher, and can not thank her enough for sharing her amazing idea.
The goal of the fifth grade Reading Olympics is to provide a fun and challenging program for 5th graders to expand and extend their reading skills. This year 5th graders are encouraged to read 20 new books (at their independent reading level) AND to show proof of reading each book through a variety of projects.
In the Reading Olympics program, students read a book and share the book with the class by completing book projects. As students read, they progress through four Olympic levels: Olympian, Bronze, Silver, and Gold. There are five projects to choose from within each level. Students must satisfactorily complete book projects in each level before moving on to the next level.
Participating in and completing the Reading Olympics is a challenging goal for all students to work towards this year. Students who complete the Reading Olympics Gold level will receive a special Gold Medal! (Participation in the full Reading Olympics program is a family decision, not an academic requirement.)
READING OLYMPIC RULES (for students)
• To become a top Olympic Reader you must progress through each level in the following order: OLYMPIAN to BRONZE to SILVER and, finally, to GOLD!
• There are 5 projects per level: 20 projects in all. You may not start a new level without completing the level before it.
• You must read a new (to you) book for each book project. You may do only one project per book (exceptions are made for students who read unusually long books—make arrangements with the teacher).
• All projects must have a completed book slip attached. The tags are available from your teacher.
• Only quality work will be accepted! Unsatisfactory work will need to be improved to meet Reading Olympic standards for quality.
• To become a top Olympic reader and to receive the Olympic Gold Medal, you must read 20 different books and complete 20 QUALITY book projects by May 31, 2016.
Please note: ALL students must complete at least the Olympian Level by the end of the year.
